Tour Guide to American Visionary Art Museum: Spectacular Collection and Tourist Info
American Visionary Art Museum or AVAM is an art museum located in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. It publicly opened on November 24, 2005 and is considered as the American national museum for self-taught art. The museum has around 4000 permanent collection pieces in 55,000 square feet of land. Of this collection, 40 pieces belong to Cabaret Mechanical Theatre of London
The AVAM is different from many other museums of its kind. Firstly, the museum conducts shows based on unique themes like High on Life and Wind in Your Hair, instead of focusing on a particular artist or artwork. Moreover, the museum has guest curators rather than staff curators. The best part is that these works have been done by many untrained and disabled yet visionary artists. Thus, inspiring many hearts, these exhibits bring out a feeling of confidence and improve creativity.
The permanent collection is presented in the first floor called as Rebecca and Joseph Meyerhoff Gallery. Most of the artwork pieces are mesmerizing but there are also a few which are completely outstanding. These include Untitled by James Franklin, Applewood Figure and Lusitania by Wayne Kusy.
The museum has conducted several wonderful exhibitions in the past. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness is among its most popular exhibitions. It comprised of stunning creational works by last of Tsar Descendants, French Revolutionaries, Algerean War veterans, Iraqi doctors, Holocaust survivors, Iroquois Indians etc. The Marriage of Art, Science & Philosophy and Home & Beast are some of its other past exhibitions.
