
Overview on Extracurricular Activities in Baltimore City College
The Baltimore City College is a high school(public) in Baltimore. It is popularly referred as "The College", "City' or the "Castle on the Hill" by the residents of the city. Established in 1839, the Baltimore City College is reputed for its high held academic traditions with notable alumni including Nobel Prize, Wolf Prize, Pulitzer Prize recipients as well as business, industry and political leaders. The Baltimore City College is also known for the many extracurricular activities offered to the students.
There are more than 20 students' organizations and clubs at the Baltimore City College. Some of these are National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, and Red Cross Club. One of the most popular organizations is the Bancroft and Carrollton - Weight Literary Society which organizes speech national and international debate and programs like Baltimore Catholic Forensic League and Baltimore Urban Debate Team.
The band and choir of the Baltimore City College are also very popular. The choir was first founded in 1950 and has 4 groups namely Mixed Choir, the Singin'/Swingin' Knights, the Concert Choir, and Knights and Daze Show Choir. These choirs perform in various genres of music including jazz, pop, spiritual, classical, and gospel music. The marching band of the Baltimore City College was established in 1940 and has 65 members. The band often performs at the Baltimore Mayor's Christmas Day Parade and has won several national level competitions.
Extracurricular activities in Baltimore City College are incomplete without the mention of its famous football team, the Knights, also known as the Collegians and the Alamedans. One of the oldest high school football teams in the Baltimore region, the football team has a policy with high emphasis on fair play and academics. The current coach, Coach George Petrides has been coaching the Knights since 1975 and has been responsible for stellar performance of the team in state and national level competitions over the years.
