History

Ocean City Maryland was earlier known as “The Ladies Resort to the Ocean”. This resort got the name Ocean City Maryland from the year 1870. The first cottage was built by Sir Issac Coffin in the 1869 and people travel Ocean City Md to enjoy off shore fishing.

The land in which this Ocean City is developed was once owned by an Englishman called Thomas Fenwick. Hence now too some people call this city as Fenwick Island. Early Ocean City saw only few people visit this island city for fishing and taking sun bath.

Transportation to Ocean City before 1881

The first mode of transport used for Ocean City Travel was ferries and stage coaches. Slowly, many cottages grew due to the increase in visitors and by the year 1878 tourists could visit Ocean City by railroad from Berlin to the shores of Sinepuxent Bay.

Development of tourism at Ocean City

Ocean City started attracting more tourists after the completion of Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in the year 1964. By the year 1970 Ocean City Maryland turned into a largest vacation resort in the east coast.

Thousands of Condominium, high rise apartments, and restaurants everything was there and Ocean City became a good business place. The first luxury hotel that was built in this Island resort was Atlantic Hotel in the year 1875. This was the first hotel to have rooms for billiards and dancing.
