Baltimore City College has an elaborate history. The college was established when the city council passed a mandate to create a high school only for males to study English literature and its classical counterpart. Baltimore City College is one of the oldest educational institutions in Baltimore. It started off with only 46 pupils. The college started giving certificates to its pupils from 1850.

African American students, who were not allowed to study in colleges, were enrolled in the education program in the month of September 1954. Women were enrolled for the first time in 1978. The institution was formerly known as The Central High School. At present there are 1326 students in the college. The percentage of male students is 37% and the percentage of female students is 63%. There are 69 teachers in the college imparting education to the students.
The Baltimore City College is popularly referred to as The Castle on the Hill. The city college covers an area of 38 acres. It has two buildings - one is the Castle on the Hill which is made in the Gothic style and the other one is the Power Plant building. The power plant building houses 5 workshops including the wood shop, electrical shop, printing shop, mechanical shop and metal shop. It is one of the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. A rivalry exists between Baltimore City College and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in all spheres including sports and academics.
The Alumni Field features in the list of National Register of Historic Places. There are over 20 organizations and clubs in the Baltimore City College. The famous organizations include Quill and Scroll and National Honor Society. The college is also home to a musical band. The City College Choir is one of the best in the city. The sports teams include basketball, football and lacrosse. The college has two publications known as The Collegian and Green Bag. Senator Ben Cardin and Admiral J. William Kime are among the notable alumni of the college.
