The race track is particularly famous for hosting the event "Preakness Stakes", which is a 1.91Km race course for three year old ponies. The footfall in this events ranks second in America. The first race of this prestigious event was held in the year 1873.
According to the history books the first American to win this event was George Anderson in 1889. Since then the legacy is carried forward by many young and talented jockeys. According to the custom, the race is flagged off only after the official state song of Maryland is sung, where the audience is also free to participate. The colors of the victorious team are displayed on top of a replica of Old Clubhouse cupola.
The Pimlico Race Course was officially thrown open for the public on 1870. This track was also known to host the iconic match between Seabiscuit and War Admiral in 1938, which the former won. The race course is now the property of MI Developments Inc. It is a premier gaming and horse racing company of North America.
The race course had to face a lot of resistance from time to time. It witnessed and countered the Great Depression, the great fire of Baltimore, antigambling movement of 1910 etc. Footfall over one hundred thousand is quite normal here with great amount of money being transacted. The economy of the area is largely linked by the financial health of the club.
