Light Rail
For any city, one of the major indices in which the development is measured is the nature of its roads, the network of roads, type of rail services available etc. In short, the development of a city can be measured on the basis of its transportation network. Baltimore city in Maryland has a very adequate transportation network. Being a sea port, it has all the four essential transportation networks i.e. road, rail, air and sea.
The 'Maryland Transit Authority' is the sole authority that governs the functioning of the various transportation networks in the city. In fact, it has been instrumental in envisaging a certain change in the way of functioning of the transport infrastructure of the city. A lot of new concepts have been incorporated which have made the process of travel in Baltimore - Maryland, very easy for an individual.

One such concept is of the 'Light Rail' it serves to ease the congestion on the road network in the core of the city and caters to the need of the nearby 'suburbs' too. The foundation of the 'Light Rail' system was laid back a long time back, somewhere in the 60's.
The city administration had a well thought out plan which led to the construction of the initial five lines running through the core arterial roads of the city. At present there are upwards of fifteen functional lines in the city with the number of daily commuters being over 40,000.
The 'Light Rail' has been an inspiration for a lot of countries which suffer from the problem of traffic congestion. In fact, a lot of countries like India, Japan, China, Brazil etc., have sent their delegations to Baltimore to study the 'Light Rail' transit system, which has made Baltimore traveling a fun experience.
